Valerie Westhead MD is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. She was a Medical Director and CMO for almost twenty-five years including as the CCBHC Medical Director at Aspire Health Partners, the largest non-profit behavioral healthcare company in Florida. She has run hospital and crisis stabilization units and comprehensive outpatient services. This included implementation of multiple evidence-based practices including Assisted Outpatient Treatment, Open Access to Medical Services, Specialty Courts, Dual Diagnosis Programming with MAT Services, psychosocial rehab and clubhouses as well as mental health and SUD residential services.
She was the Psychiatric Consultant to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office for over 14 years providing mental health services in the jail and juvenile detention center and working on a variety of projects with law enforcement including as an instructor for CIT and chairing the Seminole County Mental Health and Substance Abuse Task Force. She is currenlty a member of the Florida Model Jail Standards Committee.
She is a consultant with MTM Services, an organization that works collaboratively with the National Council for Mental Weelbeing to support innovative change in community mental health services around the country. Her primary consultation focus is on development of integrated systems of care including work with the CJS, and implementation of evidence based practices and process.
She has been involved in research related to Assisted Outpatient Treatment and implementation of evidence-based programs in community mental health services. She has presented in Florida and nationally on these topics as well as on the importance of collaboration with law enforcement through CIT and other projects.
