David Obergfell (he/him/his) is the Associate Vice President for 988 Network Engagement with Vibrant Emotional Health; just before that, he served UNC-Chapel Hill as the principal leader and collaborator on well-being and prevention initiatives as the Executive Director of Student Wellbeing and Violence Prevention/Senior Prevention Strategy Officer.
David is committed to intentional design justice, collaborating to build programs addressing intersections of health, access to care, violence prevention and wellbeing, and systemic interventions.
From 2021-2022, David served on extended active duty as a suicide prevention and interpersonal violence subject matter expert and prevention researcher with Headquarters Air Force A1Z – Integrated Resilience Directorate. Previously, he was the senior director for crisis services, with Terros Health, a Federally Qualified Healthcare Center and Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic in Arizona, where he was part of organizational clinical operations leadership and responsible for MCTs across 4 urban and rural/frontier counties with a population of over 5 million. David continues his service as a USAF Reserve Officer, clinical social worker, sexual assault prevention and response team member, and disaster mental health team chief. As an active-duty officer, he served as the family advocacy officer and DMH team chief at Joint Base Langley-Eustis. David has also been the clinical trauma services manager for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the SART and center coordinator for the Northern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault and the associate director for victim advocacy services in Coconino County, clinical coordinator for La Frontera AZ - Empact Suicide Prevention Center, victim advocate, and State Hospital forensic social worker.
David’s volunteer work includes prior member Peace Corps Sexual Assault Advisory Council, volunteering for GLSEN, the Red Cross, the National Council for Communities and Justice, and the Global Volunteer Network.
David holds a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Southern California, focusing on reducing IPSDV lethality (desperation-based lethality). He has a Master's in Social Work from Arizona State University and a Master's in Forensic Psychology from Argosy University.
David maintains the following credentials: LCSW (AZ), Victim Advocate, Civilian and Military (CA & D-SAACP) through the National Organization for Victim Assistance; Certified Disaster Mental Health Response Specialist; Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) [Clinical Certs -- EMDR, CPT, PE, ACT, MI, and CBT for Suicide & Insomnia and DBT Skills]
Board Certifications: Diplomate with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and Diplomate with the American Board of Clinical Social Work.
