Presentation Description: Many jurisdictions across the country have made efforts to divert people with significant mental health needs away from the criminal legal system and into community-based care, yet many people living with behavioral health disorders continue to experience arrest and the perils of pretrial detention. Expanding the crisis care continuum model into the pretrial detention space, with access to care as the focus, is an opportunity to use the Initial Hearing as a point of diversion.

Learning Objectives:

Explore the current challenges and barriers that criminal justice stakeholders encounter when collaborating to identify, divert, and access community-based care from initial detention.
Explore the concept of verticals of diversion that can be developed for people with mental health needs in initial detention.
Discuss the concept of expanding the crisis care continuum to initial detention to increase access to community-based care.
