Pain and addiction represent two related public health crises in the US with fatal drug overdoses at 108,000 per year, 140,000 deaths annually from alcohol-related causes, and over 20% of adults with chronic pain. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) established the Pain and Addiction Care in the Emergency Department (PACED) accreditation to drive improved quality of care. Our determination to achieve PACED accreditations for all 18 EDs was a multi-faceted goal which included reorganizing our efforts and unifying our approach on a system level. To achieve this, we collaborated with on-site multi-disciplinary teams to implement best practices.
