TP19 - Using Social Determinants of Health to Address the Crisis of Low Life Expectancy in People with IDD

People with IDD die 15 years earlier on average than their typically developing peers and may be worse for those with dual diagnosis. Even when controlling genetic conditions causing both intellectual disabilities and medical concerns, it is clear that Social Determinants of Health such as lack of access to appropriate health care, supports around health literacy and loneliness contribute to these poor outcomes. In this presentation we will explore these concerns and some tools we have developed at Access to address these disparities including healthy literacy education, nutritional supports, and person centered supports connecting to social groups in their community.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define health disparities and social determinants of health that disproportionately impact people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Share tools that have been useful in improving outcomes including health education that can be done with all levels of IDD and person centered social supports to reduce loneliness.
  • Apply the tools to case vignettes and explore opportunities for further initiatives in supporting people with IDD to live healthy, rewarding lives.
