Dr. Ken Hopper, MD, MBA, over the course of his 30-year career has sought out and developed methods to proactively improve health and wellbeing.
Through a period of significant health system evolution, Dr. Hopper has served US populations as National Medical Director of Integrated Care at Anthem’s Government Business Division (GBD) and as Chief Medical Officer/VP of Clinical Innovation at Humana’s Behavioral Division. At Humana, Dr. Hopper led or co-led early models of integrated telephonic care management and medical provider-specific psychotropic use education. HIs team at Anthem refined targeted field-based case management “on the streets” support in a national project to help the most vulnerable engage in health. Fort Worth’s “Pathway to Housing” initiative was particularly notable for its multiparty involvement and multisource funding. He also led the whole-person transformation of multiple primary care clinics via the Collaborative Care model (AIMS Ctr, U of WA). All projects promoted and led by Dr. Hopper in this national role were designed to create value through efficiencies AND improved health outcomes. Some initiatives would clearly meet Quintuple Aim goals.
Dr. Hopper serves currently as the Assistant Dean of Health Systems Science Education at the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (pending accreditation). His significant experience in innovative care design, value measurement, and value-financing is focused on the education of future physicians who are enlightened, adaptable, patient-centered, and equipped to innovate. At the TCU Burnett School of Medicine in Fort Worth, he was part of the first cohort of Physician Development Coaches charged with instilling skills of leadership and empathy in the context of rapidly changing expectations and needs.
Dr. Hopper is a founding member and contributing author-expert for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing’s medical director institute, the APA's integrated care committee, and the value-based care/financing and socioeconomic committees of the Texas Medical Association.
The designation of Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and membership in the American College of Psychiatrists are two of Dr. Hopper's most cherished honors. He attended and graduated Baylor University (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa), The University of Texas Medical Branch, and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Hopper also has an MBA from a combined program with The University of Texas at Dallas and Southwestern Medical School (Gamma Beta Sigma International Honor Society).
