Immigrant and refugee communities experience trauma due to prolonged loss of country and identity and a history of traumatic experiences in their home countries. For these communities, it is a necessary experience to coordinate and share stories. American Muslims’ health professionals' model for MHFA training has included a unique cross-cultural perspective to broaden its trainings for these communities. Refugees are often unaware of the emergency plans that are required in families when a mental health crisis occurs. This presentation will discuss how the organization approaches this topic with those who have taken the course with immigrant and refugee family histories.
Learning Objectives:
Identify three specific mental health concerns within refugee communities.
Develop an integrated knowledge of cross-cultural implications on the mental health of refugee communities in their MHFA instruction.
Plan an MHFA training which includes a focus on immigrant and refugee communities.
Establish points for a discussion on the implications of refugee mental health experiences.
Evaluate self-knowledge on immigrant and refugee community mental health concerns.
