MP38 - Firearm Injury and Mortality Prevention: Examining Uptake of Universal Screening for Firearm Injury Risk Across Three Pilot Emergency Departments

Firearm-related injuries and deaths are major drivers of morbidity and mortality in the United States, claiming over 48,000 lives last year, and surpassing motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. From July-November 2021, universal screening for firearm access and violence risk for patients 12 and older was implemented in three Northwell Health EDs. ED FIMP screening is a promising tool to identify and address firearm injury risk. Factors associated with increased FIMP utilization include active championship and system-level prioritization of firearm injury prevention.
