D5 - Assessing Hispanic Audiences’ Perceptions to Inform Overdose Prevention Messages in Spanish

While Hispanic people experience multiple factors similar to other racial and ethnic groups that negatively impact mental health, they may also experience social and structural factors contributing to drug use and drug overdose risk. Hispanic audience perspectives may aid the development of tailored communications to fill knowledge gaps, address cultural stigma and bring attention to intersectional inequities contributing to drug overdose risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted focus groups and individual interviews to assess its Spanish-language Stop Overdose campaign messages. Mental health themes emerged regarding knowledge, beliefs and attitudes about drug use and overdose.

  • Identify the individual, interpersonal, sociocultural and structural factors contributing to negative mental health outcomes, drug use and overdose risk for Hispanic, Spanish-speaking populations.
  • Describe how the intersectionality of immigration status and Hispanic ethnicity compounds the negative impacts of mental health and contributes to drug use and overdose risk.
  • Apply insights to the development of strategic drug overdose messages among this population in Spanish.
