C6 - Navigating the Development of an Integrated Primary and Behavioral Health Care Program

When behavioral health providers expand their integrated care programs to include physical health providers, what issues should be considered to ensure high-quality care and successful partnerships? What does effective care coordination look like, and what practical concerns must be considered? What clinic-level strategies do integrated care providers use to overcome workforce, billing and health information technology challenges? Two community mental health centers and Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s Behavioral Health Services Department will discuss findings from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Promoting Integration of Primary and Behavioral Health Care (PIPBHC) five-year multistate grant.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify different types of partnerships between community mental health and primary care providers and highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each.
  • Examine common behavioral health/primary care integration challenges and which strategies have been most effective in overcoming them
  • Describe how rural and urban providers have tailored their integrated care programs to serve their communities most effectively.
