Our physical surroundings powerfully shape how we feel, what we experience, and what opportunities we imagine. Conveying deep caring and hope is hard when folks (staff and people served alike) are crammed into dingy spaces with poor signage, glaring lights, and worn-out furniture. Consequently, National Council members are incorporating equity, trauma and resilience informed principles into building and landscape design with great results. This panel features National Council members leading the way. They will share essential principles, lessons learned and practical actions – from major renovations to low-cost changes -- to create inclusive, safe, beautiful and healing spaces.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understnd how intentional architectural, interior, and landscape design can powerfully support inclusion, recovery, resilience and healing.
  • Explore the concept of resilience in built environments and how it contributes to recovery and healing for individiuals who have experienced trauma.
  • Learn essential principles of architectural, interior and landscape design and related policies, procedures and norms that are trauma-informed and resilience-driven and promote inclusive welcome for staff and people and communities served.
  • Learn strategies for integrating healing spaces within architectural, interior and landscape designs to promote recovery and resilience.
  • Take-away practical advice, including low-budget ideas, from other National Council members implementing these successful principles.
