This presentation addresses the critical need for LGBTQ+ affirming care amidst ongoing health disparities and healthcare gaps. Through two organizational pathways—one from a CCBHC (Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic) and another from an LGBTQ+ organization—attendees will gain practical insights into creating affirming treatment spaces. Presenters will discuss LGBTQ+ specific competencies and care from an intersectional lens, offer adaptable actions for providers, and explore strategies to overcome implementation barriers. The workshop aims to guide attendees in developing skills in affirming behavioral health interventions for the LGBTQ+ community and implementing tangible changes on both the individual professional and organizational level.

  • Identify current behavioral health challenges and strengths related to LGBTQ+ individuals, specifically the intersectional factors that impact the prevalence of substance use.
  • Clarify understanding of LGBTQ+ affirming language, along with the unique experiences and traumas of LGBTQ+ people.
