MHFA18 - The Mental Health Toolkit: A Strategy to Engage Indianapolis’ Communities of Color Through MHFA

The city of Indianapolis continues to address disparities in access to mental health treatment among communities of color, especially within the African American community. In 2022, Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, through sponsorship of the city’s Office of Public Health and Safety, launched the Mental Health Toolkit to work within those communities to reduce stigma, provide resources and empower community members. This presentation will outline the efforts to establish this funding stream, the ongoing work to develop community partnerships, utilize MHFA in community engagement, and develop a pathway for community members to become MHFA Instructors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify strategies in developing community partnerships that facilitate reduction of mental health/substance use disorder stigma in communities of color.
  • Discover how to use MHFA as an evidence base for community engagement and discussion.
  • Identify strategies for perpetuating MHFA in communities of color by providing funding for them to become Instructors themselves.
